Five years since the first lockdown in 2020. Strange to think back to it now and remember how we felt at the time. Do you remember all of the rainbows painted by children everywhere you looked? The rainbow became a symbol of support and hope for key workers and particularly everyone working in the NHS.

The NHS commissioned me to work with the pictures and messages sent to the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh to make this artwork. They had been pinned to the walls in the wards and continued down corridors. One of the wards couldn’t throw them away and were determined that these pictures and messages should not be forgotten. A poignant reminder of the public support which helped the RIE staff work during that strange and frightening time exactly five years ago in the first three months of lockdown.

I have titled the artwork ‘Rainbow to Recovery’ which was one of the phrases written above a child’s painted rainbow. The artwork now hangs in the north corridor off from the reception at the RIE where hundreds of people pass it every day. I hope I have done the rainbows justice and the hard work of the staff at RIE five years ago will always be remembered.

Jacqueline Reid, Clinical Nurse Manager quotes: “Over those unnerving first weeks, we were inundated with so many pictures of rainbows and happy positive thoughts. There was an eerie feeling in the hospital at that time. Staff were scared and frightened; the hospital corridors were empty and very quiet. We initially had the pictures displayed on the walls in the wards and our staff rest areas, but they soon spilled out into the corridor of the second floor along the corridor walls. We felt these drawings and phrases were too precious not to do something with, and wanted them be kept forever. They are now a part of the Royal Infirmary’s history of the pandemic in this beautiful artwork.”

At the end of last year, I completed a project in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital canteen which I’d been working on for quite a few months. Commissioned by @nhslothcharity and working with Becky Brazil, I collated images mainly from the Lothian Health Services Archives and designed an exhibition to celebrate 200 years of the ever-changing landscape of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Morningside; showing how it has developed and expanded, while continuing to serve those with mental health conditions.

These images are of the exhibition being installed just before Christmas last year. If you’re passing, why not take a peek, the canteen is open to the public from 9am to 2pm.

Believe it or not - the last image of the canteen from the early 1900’s is the same room which the canteen is in now! During the 1960’s, the ceiling was lowered and its historic past was boarded up, reflecting the style of the times. Wouldn’t it be great to break it open again and discover what’s above those polystyrene ceiling tiles and the windows behind those plasterboard walls!

This post is long overdue, but better late than never 😀 I hope to have some more photographs to post here soon so that you can see the full exhibition without the ladders.

She brings them to @Copystand for me to photograph, I then send the photographs to @florisbooks, the superb publishers of An Illustrated Treasury of Dragon Tales by @theresabreslinauthor.
Look out for it in all good bookshops and discover the beautiful dangerous dragons yourself. Makes the perfect last minute Xmas pressie for all ages!
